Frequently asked questions

  • Is NYD approved by IMCA?

NYD is a member of the IMCA and the certificates you receive when you pass the Class 1 or Class 2 courses are recognized by the IMCA for offshore diving.

  • Where can I stay during the course?

You will be sent a list of apartments / rooms for rent in the immediate area. An agreement is made directly with the landlord, and the prices vary from  5 500 NOK –  7 000 NOK per month.

  • What equipment do I need to bring?

You must have vams (warm suit for use in dry suit), flippers for dry suit, neoprene gloves, neoprene hood, work clothes for outdoor work and suitable footwear.

You also need a PC or tablet for the theoretical training.

  • Do I have to have my own diving suit?

You can use your own suit if you wish, otherwise you can borrow a suit from us during the course.

  • Can personal equipment be purchased at the school?

A local supplier comes to the school during the first days, and then you can buy what you need of personal diving equipment.

  • What does the course cost in total?

The course fee is  68 000,- NOK In addition, certificates and books cost approx.  1 200 NOK. Medical check comes at 3 900 NOK, and personal equipment about 5 000 NOK.

  • Does the entire course fee have to be paid before the course starts?

No. Only the deposit must be paid in advance. An invoice for the remaining will be sent out approximately 2 weeks after the start of the course, and then this must be paid within 14 days of receiving it.

  • Can I take the medical check at school?

Yes. NYD’s own diving doctor conducts health examinations in the first days of the course. Our doctor has all the necessary authorizations to issue health certificates for professional divers.

  • Do I have to take a physical test before the course?

Yes. The physical test must be completed before the medical examination. Further information about the test will be sent to you upon registration.

  • I have some medical challenges. What conditions are disqualifying for obtaining a health certificate for divers?

Good health is required to become a diver, and normally healthy people without chronic diseases or the need for regular use of medication pass the medical examination. However, some conditions are incompatible with diving. Examples of this are asthma, substance abuse, obesity, psychiatry and epilepsy. If you have any questions, it is advisable to consult a diving doctor in advance.

  • How are the job opportunities?

The labor market for divers is good. But you must be flexible, hardworking and willing to travel.
